The number of travelers between Morocco and Spain has more than doubled in 2022. This trend, which continues this year, makes the kingdom a potentially very promising market for the Iberian Peninsula.
After a period of lean due to the pandemic Covid-19, tourism is experiencing an upturn in Spain. This is evidenced by the data of the institution Aeropuertos Españoles y Navegación Aérea (AENA). A total of 53.6 million passengers passed through Spanish airports in January, February and March. Spain owes this improvement to countries like Morocco. Travelers flying to and from the kingdom increased by 134% (more than double) to over 736,000 passengers in the first quarter. Morocco now ranks twelfth in the top 15 countries with the most passengers.
With nearly 1.5 million, Portugal is seventh in the ranking, for an increase last year of 86%. With 3.3 million passengers, almost 60% more than last year, Italy was the fourth best market at the end of March. France ranks fifth with 2.7 million passengers, an increase of 35% compared to the first quarter of 2022. With 600,000 passengers in just three months (48% more than in 2022), Poland rounds out the top 15 countries.
This upturn is expected to continue, as airlines intend to increase their flight offer for the summer season. Flights to Morocco have increased by 60%, to Poland by almost 50% and to Portugal by 30%.
