Marrakech-Menara Airport has been ranked the second best regional airport in Africa by the Skytrax World Airport Awards 2023. The ranking was dominated by Durban-King Shaka in South Africa, followed closely by Marrakech-Menara, which thus beat out Kigali in Rwanda for second place.
The annual Skytrax World Airport Awards 2023 ranking for “regional airports” has been released, and the results are no real surprise, Air Journal reports. Nagoya-Centrair in Japan topped the world rankings, followed by Düsseldorf in Germany and Haikou-Meiland in China. The U.S. also did well with Houston-Hobby and Cincinnati-Northern Kentucky in the top 10.
But it was the European airports that attracted the most attention, with Düsseldorf and Hamburg leading the ranking, closely followed by Paris-Orly, Cologne-Bonn and London-City. Budapest in Hungary, Malaga, Malta, Porto and Alicante also ranked high.
In Africa, Durban-King Shaka was voted best regional airport, ahead of Marrakech-Menara and Kigali in Rwanda. South Africa also did well with Bloemfontein, Port Elizabeth and East London.
Finally, the ranking also revealed that Papeete-Faa’a was ranked ninth in the category of best regional airports in Australia/Pacific.
While some airports are used to being at the top of the rankings, this year saw the rise of Asian airports, confirming the trend of recent years.
