Sahara: UAE diplomacy meets with De Mistura

-

The United Arab Emirates intend to influence the Security Council on the course of the Sahara issue. This is evidenced by the meeting held yesterday in New York between an Abu Dhabi delegate to the United Nations and the Secretary General’s personal envoy for Western Sahara. “A constructive and interesting discussion as always with seasoned diplomat Staffan De Mistura,” wrote the UAE diplomacy.

The Emirates support the Moroccan character of the Sahara. A position that the country has indeed reiterated last month during the debates at the 4th UN Committee on the territorial dispute. Support that Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Kuwait had also expressed from the same platform, arousing the ire of the Algerian authorities.

The United Arab Emirates were elected last June as a non-permanent member of the Security Council from January 1, 2022 to December 31, 2023. Brazil and Albania, Ghana and Gabon will also join the executive body of the United Arab Emirates. UN for the same period. The five states will replace Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Vietnam, Estonia, Niger and Tunisia.
