The recognition of the Moroccan character of the Sahara by the United States and its military support to the kingdom would be the basis of Algeria’s animosity towards Morocco.
According to Mustapha El Khalfi, Algeria is very upset against Morocco because of the important breakthrough of the kingdom in the provinces of the Sahara, with the support of the United States which had recognized in December, its sovereignty over this territory. In an interview with the daily Assabah, the former minister responsible for relations with parliament and government spokesman, believes that Algeria’s attitude clearly shows that he fears Morocco in the Sahara.
Recalling the opening by Morocco of dozens of consulates in Laâyoune and Dakhla, thus consolidating its base in the Sahara, El Khalfi maintains that Algeria has a hard tooth against Morocco, whose army is now authorized to use American weapons in the Sahara. The former minister also attests that the FAR are more experienced than the Algerian army, which is certainly more equipped.
Moreover, Algeria and the Polisario are forced to negotiate with Morocco in order to find a political solution to the Sahara conflict, in accordance with the latest UN Security Council resolutions, he said.
