This is another success for Morocco in the new “war of the cards”. After the Arab League, which called on its members to use its official map including the Moroccan Sahara, it is the turn of the African Football Confederation (CAF) to adopt a map recognizing the Moroccan character of the Sahara. About ten days before the start of the African Cup of Nations in Cameroon (from January 9 to February 6, 2022), the pan-African body has published on its official website a map of the continent divided into six football zones, including that of North Africa, where Morocco’s borders clearly integrate its Saharan provinces.
This new diplomatic setback inflicted on the Polisario separatists and their supporters will have to provoke new reactions from the Algiers regime. On December 26, Algeria’s envoy for Western Sahara and the Maghreb, Ammar Belani, desperately tried to downplay the importance of the Arab League’s decision, believing that it had not clearly “Demarcated” the borders of the Arab states in its official map.
