Given the essential role played by the weekly souks in socio-economic development, the Minister of Agriculture announced that he was working to renovate these spaces.
Morocco has more than 800 weekly souks, including 753 in rural areas and 69 others in urban areas, according to Mohamed Sadiki, Minister of Agriculture. Asked about the management of these spaces by the deputy Abdenabi El Aidoudi in the House of Representatives, the minister specified in his written response that his department is working on a detailed roadmap for the renovation of these weekly souks whose usefulness for traders and farmers no longer needs to be demonstrated.
“This strategy of renovation and development of weekly markets in rural areas will improve the attractiveness of these regions, as well as the living conditions of its inhabitants”, underlined Mohamed Sadiki, adding that “this new vision will make it possible to strengthen the competitiveness of the rural economy, the creation of jobs, the organization and development of commercial activity in rural areas as well as the promotion of local development”.
