The advent of the Covid-19 health crisis and the Russian-Ukrainian conflict afterwards did not prevent remittances from migrants residing in Italy to their respective countries. Italy has totaled 8.2 billion euros in remittances for the year 2022, 500 million euros more than in 2021.
The Moroccan diaspora ranks 4th among all other nationalities, with a total of 566 million euros of transfers to Morocco at the end of 2022, with a growth of 18 million euros compared to a year earlier.
In first place is the Bangladeshi diaspora with a total of 1.2 billion euros against 873 million euros in 2021, ahead of Pakistan which totaled 700 million in 2022 against 597 million in 2021. In third place is the Philippines with 623 million euros in 2022 versus 591 million in 2021.
Clearly, the resumption of human mobility has stimulated a return to sending remittances through unofficial channels. The analysis of flows to other countries closer to Italy (and therefore easier to reach), such as Bulgaria, which goes from 29.5 million euros in 2021 to 26 in 2022, and Moldova, which goes from 143 million euros received in 2021 to 139 in 2022, also supports this thesis.
