Moroccan elected spokesperson for the Coordinating Council of Muslims in Germany

The General Secretary of the Central Council of Muslims in Germany (ZDM), Abdassamad El Yazidi, was elected this week as the new spokesperson for the Coordination Council of Muslims in Germany (KRM). According to German radio Deutschlandfunk, the Moroccan-German will take over the task from tomorrow.

The 46-year-old said he wanted to “make a contribution to critical and constructive talks and reduce prejudice and resentment against Muslims and their organizations” with the new federal government. Abdassamad El Yazidi thus replaces Burhan Kesici of the Islamic Council of the Federal Republic of Germany.

The Muslim Coordination Council was founded in Germany in 2007 as a working platform for the four largest Islamic organizations in the country. Originally formed by the Turkish-Islamic Union of the Institute for Religion (DITIB), Central Council of Muslims of Germany (ZDM), the Islamic Council of the Federal Republic of Germany (IRD) and the Association Islamic Cultural Centers (VIKZ), the council has been expanded to accommodate, since 2019, the Central Council of Moroccans in Germany (ZRMD) as well as the Union of Albanian Islamic Centers (UIAZD).
