Ghita Bahmad, a Moroccan-Quebecer wants to revolutionize agriculture in Dubai

-

Ghita Bahmad, a 33-year-old Moroccan-Quebecer, food engineer, wants to revolutionize agriculture in Dubai with a soilless cultivation technique used in Canada for the production of cannabis.

After spending two and a half months there to carry out market research, Ghita Bahmad moved to Dubai where she wanted to materialize an “old desire to know the Arab world better”, that of producing fruits and vegetables. To do this, she relies on aeroponics, more specifically a soil-less cultivation technique used in Canada for the production of cannabis.

“The roots of plants do not receive the nutrient solution by bathing in it, but by sprinkling it,” she explains. The plants are installed in vertical towers bristling with small reservoirs open both outwards, for the aerial part of the plant, and inwards, where the roots are moistened by a network of tubes “. “Each 2.40 m tower can accommodate 304 plants. In a room of 930 square meters, we house 96 towers, making it possible to produce 375,000 lettuces per year, ”adds the thirty-something.

Ghita plans to invest in growing lettuce first, because “it generates turnover quickly,” reports Maville.com. Other productions including strawberries will follow.
